Every monsoon, the same scene repeats across Kolkata. The rain starts, the road outside fills up, and within an hour dirty water is creeping under your front door, into your living room, and up your walls. You move the furniture, switch off the power, and wait it out — again.

If this sounds familiar, the problem is not the rain. The problem is that your house has slowly ended up below road level. And no amount of sandbags or drainage pumps will change that.

That’s where house lifting in Kolkata comes in. At SRBL House Lifting Company, we raise entire homes — brick, RCC, single-storey or multi-storey — to a safe height above the road, without demolishing a single wall. This guide explains why so many Kolkata homeowners are choosing this solution in 2026, how it works, and whether your house is a candidate.

Why Kolkata Homes Keep Sinking Below Road Level

Kolkata’s roads don’t stay at the same height. Every time a road is repaired or re-carpeted, a fresh layer of material goes on top of the old one. Over years and multiple repairs, the road climbs upward — while your house stays exactly where it was built.

Add to that:

• Low-lying geography – large parts of South and East Kolkata sit only marginally above the surrounding water table.
• Ageing drainage systems – many neighbourhoods rely on drainage networks that struggle during heavy, concentrated rainfall.
• Old construction standards – houses built decades ago often have a plinth of just a foot or two, which was adequate then but isn’t now.

The result: thousands of homes that were once level with the street are now a step or two below it. And water always flows downhill — straight into your ground floor.

5 Signs Your House Needs Lifting (Not Just Repairs)

Before spending money on repeated repairs, check whether your home shows these warning signs. If two or more apply, a house below road level solution — not a patch job — is what you actually need.

1. Your House Is Below Road Level

Stand at your gate and look at the road. If you step down into your home, water will follow you every time it rains. This is the single biggest indicator that house lifting is the right fix.

2. Waterlogging Every Monsoon

If your ground floor floods once, it may be a drainage blockage. If it floods every year, it’s a height problem. Pumps and temporary barriers only buy you hours — they don’t solve the cause. A genuine waterlogging solution for a house in Kolkata means getting the floor above the flood line permanently.

3. Damp Walls & Water Seepage on the Ground Floor

Peeling paint, dark patches climbing the walls, a musty smell that never leaves, plaster crumbling near the floor — these are signs of rising damp. When your plinth sits at or below the water level outside, moisture wicks upward through brick and mortar. This isn’t just cosmetic: damp and water seepage on the ground floor in Kolkata homes weakens the structure over time and can trigger respiratory issues for the family.

4. Low Plinth or a Sinking Foundation

Many older homes in North Kolkata, Behala, Garia and similar belts were built with a low plinth. Some have also settled unevenly over decades, causing cracks at corners and doors that no longer close properly. A house sinking or low plinth problem cannot be fixed by raising the floor tiles — the entire structure needs to come up.

5. Repeated Repair Bills That Never End

Repainting every year, re-tiling after each flood, replacing rotted doors and furniture — add it up. Homeowners often find that a few years of “temporary” fixes cost more than a permanent solution would have.

What Is House Lifting? (And Why It Beats Demolishing)

House lifting is a specialised engineering process where the complete structure is separated from its foundation, raised using synchronised hydraulic jacks, and placed on a new, higher plinth and foundation.

Your rooms, walls, roof, staircase — everything stays intact. You simply end up living in the same house, several feet higher.

Compared to demolition and rebuild:

For a structurally sound house that simply sits too low, lifting is almost always the smarter choice.

How SRBL Lifts a House in Kolkata – Step by Step

Here’s what happens when you book our house lifting services in Kolkata:

Step 1: Free Site Survey & Structural Assessment

Our engineers inspect the structure, soil condition, current plinth height, road level, and neighbouring buildings. We tell you honestly whether lifting is feasible and how many feet you should raise.

Step 2: Excavation Around the Foundation

The ground around the base is carefully excavated to expose the foundation and create space for the jacking system.

Step 3: Placement of Jacks & Support Beams

Steel beams are inserted beneath load-bearing points, and hydraulic jacks are positioned at calculated intervals to distribute weight evenly.

Step 4: Synchronised Lifting

The house is raised gradually and uniformly. Synchronisation is critical — uneven lifting is what causes cracks, so every jack moves together under engineer supervision.

Step 5: Plinth Height Increase & Foundation Strengthening

Once at the target height, a new plinth is constructed and the foundation is reinforced. This plinth height increase in Kolkata homes is what delivers the permanent flood protection.

Step 6: Lowering, Reconnection & Finishing

The structure is set onto its new base. Plumbing, drainage, electrical lines, and the entrance steps or ramp are reconnected and finished.

What Does House Lifting Cost in Kolkata?

Cost depends on several factors, so any company quoting a flat figure without seeing your house should be treated with caution. At SRBL, pricing is based on:

• Built-up area (sq ft)
• Number of floors (single storey vs G+1 / G+2)
• Lift height required (raising 2 ft vs 5 ft)
• Structure type (brick & lime mortar vs RCC)
• Soil condition and site accessibility (narrow lanes need extra planning)

We provide a written, itemised quote after the free site inspection — no hidden charges.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is house lifting safe for old brick houses in Kolkata?
Yes, when done by experienced professionals. Older brick structures are lifted regularly; the key is a proper structural assessment beforehand and synchronised, gradual lifting.

Will house lifting stop waterlogging permanently?
If the house is raised sufficiently above the road and expected flood line, yes. Unlike pumps or barriers, it removes the root cause — the height difference.

Can we stay in the house during lifting?
No. For safety, everyone must vacate the house before lifting begins and may return only after the work is safely completed.

How many feet should I raise my house?
It depends on your current level versus the road, drainage behavior in your lane, and how much road height is likely to increase in the future. Our survey team recommends a height based on your specific site.

Can a G+1 or G+2 building be lifted?
Yes. Multi-storey RCC buildings are lifted using additional jacks and beam configurations calculated for the total load.

What is the difference between house lifting and house shifting?
House lifting raises a building vertically in its existing position. House shifting moves a building horizontally to a new location on the same plot. Lifting solves height and waterlogging problems; shifting is used to create setbacks, road-widening space, or a new layout.

Is house lifting better than demolishing and rebuilding?
For a structurally sound house that sits too low, lifting is usually better. It costs a fraction of a rebuild, takes weeks instead of months, requires simpler approvals, and preserves the existing home. Rebuilding is the better option only when a structural engineer confirms the building is unsafe.

What factors affect house lifting cost?
Five factors determine house lifting cost: built-up area in square feet, number of floors, the height to be raised, structure type (brick vs RCC), and site accessibility. Narrow lanes and multi-storey buildings increase cost; small single-storey homes cost the least.
